IMPORTANT INFORMATION FOR COMPSAC 2022 AUTHORS

COMPSAC 2022 will be completely virtual as it was in 2020 and 2021, and all presentations will be done virtually. We will announce this update also in the submission acceptance letters to authors. Authors of accepted papers will be required to provide a video of their presentation together with the submission of the final version of their papers. COMPSAC will provide detailed guidance regarding preparation and submission of these videos.

Special Opportunity for COMPSAC Authors

Journal then Conference (JC) – present new work based on previously published journal paper

COMPSAC offers the opportunity to authors who wish to present new work or work they intend to do based on a recently or soon-to-be published paper.  The original paper upon which the new submission is based must have been published or accepted for publication in a peer-reviewed, IEEE or IPSJ journal after January 2019.  (The JC program was formerly called J1C2.)

Submission Instructions

JC submissions must be made using the COMPSAC EasyChair online submission system and must be in the format of a single PDF document containing:

  • The title of the new, JC submission – different than the title of the original paper;
  • The names and affiliations of all authors making the new, JC submission.  The submitter must be the first, second, or third author of the original paper;
  • Two COMPSAC symposia that might consider the submission relevant;
  • The IEEE or IPSJ publication in which the original paper was published/accepted;
  • The date of publication/acceptance of the original paper;
  • Reference to the original paper:
    • If already published: the citation to the original paper; or
    • If online: the DOI and/or URL to it;
  • If accepted, but not yet published, the letter of acceptance; and a copy of the accepted paper.
  • A 2-page (IEEE CS Conference format) submission description including:
    • ½ page: A summary of the original published/accepted paper;
    • 1 ½ pages: A description of new work that you (with others, if relevant) have done to extend the work described in the original paper;
    • Three or four concluding sentences explaining how or why the submission (new work) is relevant to the COMPSAC symposia to which it is being submitted.
  • A single PDF containing the above content/materials.

The submission will be lightly reviewed for suitability, scope, technical content and merit by the relevant symposium program committees.  If accepted and presented at the conference, the conference proceedings will contain the submission and a link to the original published paper so that conference participants have access to the paper upon which the submission is based.

Conference then Journal (CJ) – presented papers offered to journals for publication

COMPSAC offers authors of our best papers the opportunity to have their presented COMPSAC paper published in an IEEE or IPSJ peer reviewed journal.  (This CJ program was formerly called C1J2.)  IEEE policy states that any presented conference papers submitted for journal publication must contain 30% additional or new content beyond the content presented and published in the conference proceedings.  This policy prevents the inclusion of identical papers, perhaps with different titles, authors, etc., from being included in Xplore, the IEEE digital library. Each journal Editor-in-Chief (EIC) defines the nature and scope of that 30% relevant to their publication.

For papers to qualify for our CJ program, each COMPSAC symposium selects at least one “best” paper and recommends prospective journals/magazines for the selection(s). These papers are agreed to by the organizing committee at the annual COMPSAC PC meeting. After a paper is presented at the conference, authors of the selected papers are asked if they agree to have their paper forwarded to an appropriate IEEE or IPSJ journal for inclusion in the journal.  If the author(s) agree(s), the symposium chair offers the paper(s) together with their COMPSAC reviews, to the journal EIC. EICs decide whether to consider the paper for review; they may or may not use the COMPSAC reviews in the process; they may prefer to rely solely on their own review processes.   After a paper has been submitted to an EIC, all subsequent communication is between the author and the journal.

Following the conference and during the time that COMPSAC papers are undergoing journal review, only their abstract is included in the conference proceedings submitted to Xplore.  The abstract contains a note that the paper has been submitted for consideration for publication in another (unnamed) COMPSAC-sister organization journal.  If the paper is accepted for publication by the journal, an appropriate pointer to the published version is included with the abstract in Xplore.  If the paper is rejected by the journal, the existing paper abstract in Xplore is replaced by the full text of the original paper presented at the conference.  No mention of the journal activities is included/retained.
